Valkenburg aan de Geul is a touristic place in the south of the province Limburg. Characteristic is the castle ruin on top of the hill and the main streets in the centre of Valkenburg have café’s, restaurants and pubs.
Valkenburg history: Siege and conquest are part of the history of Valkenburg, but Valkenburg has been independent for long time. The Valkenburg castle on top of the hill was destroyed in 1672 by troops from Holland, being afraid that French troops would conquer the castle. It never was rebuilt. Also the Valkenburg city wall was destroyed and only two gates remain.
Valkenburg sightseeing: Tourism in Valkenburg became important in the 19th century. Tourists like the scenery around Valkenburg that is suited for walks and (mountain) bike tours, but Valkenburg itself offers a lot too. Valkenburg has several caves, historical buildings, a wellness resort and casino. For dining or a drink you have to be in the Grote Straat Centrum or Muntstraat. A very cosy area until night. In winter the Valkenburg Christmas market inside the caves are very popular among tourists.
